Tell me a bit about yourself
I was born in Edgware, London and my parents moved to Letchworth Garden City, Hertfordshire, which is where I grew up and started work pretty much straight from school.
I spent 21 years working for Fujitsu, in various IT Support roles/locations, before deciding in 2008 that it was about time I tried somewhere different. Since then I worked in Document Capture, Farming, and Housing Software so you could say a bit of a mixed bag of industries!
My partner Sym and I moved to Wales in 2014 where I started work in Swansea. We moved further North two years ago for a quieter life which we both love, and got married on 4th July. I have been with Quartix for 18 months now, and I can honestly say, hand on heart, I’ve never enjoyed working as much as I do right now.
I have three step children aged 27, 26, and 20, and one beautiful granddaughter, who turned three this year. As the kids are grown up now, it leaves us more time to ourselves which we thought we’d look forward to, but actually we miss all the running around we used to do!
In my spare time, I’m a big football fan, and have supported Arsenal since I was 7, and I’m looking forward to the “post-Wenger” era ( I think!). I’m also a huge lover of music, it is pretty much an obsession. I cannot go out shopping without coming home with some more tunes. I’m old school, so I don’t do a lot of streaming, I prefer to collect physical albums, mainly 70s/80s soul and funk. There is always music playing at home, and I’d happily give up my TV before my Hi-Fi. Back in the day, I ran a mobile disco for a few years where I was able to combine my love of music with some work on the side. The downside of that however is that years of headphone abuse have left me with tinnitus and I’ve recently started wearing hearing aids for work so I can hear what my colleagues are saying!
How do you find it working for Quartix?
I work in the Fleet Technical Support team, which is an extremely busy department. Every day is different as we receive a whole raft of different types of queries, from both customers and our engineers out in the field. After many years in an IT role, I really enjoy learning about Telematics, and I get great satisfaction in assisting our customers on the support side. These are exciting times for Quartix, and I’m happy to be making a contribution. Most of us in the Newtown office live locally so we do get a few chances to get together outside of work at various social/sporting events to let off some steam!
How would you describe the Company culture?
Well-structured and customer focused. The first thing that struck me when I joined Quartix, was the feeling that the company really has got big ambitions and there is a “family” feel to the working environment. It may sound clichéd but we’re all pulling in the same direction for the company. It’s a real tight knit community where you can feel comfortable talking to anyone at any level and if you need help in any area of the business, there is always someone there to help. Each team works as well either individually or combined where required, to achieve the most efficient outcome for the Customer.
What’s a day in your life like?
At work, the time just flies by. If I’m not helping a Customer with a technical support or website enquiry, I’ll be helping to build reports, or liaising with an engineer to assist with an install or service call.
In my spare time, my partner and I love to go for walks across the Welsh countryside, or we take the river tow path until we reach a suitable watering hole!
I’m a keen cook and I like to think I’m half decent in the kitchen, but if you asked my other half she probably say I’m more Little Chef than Master Chef.
As I only live around the corner from the office, I don’t get the exercise that I should, so I’ve recently re-joined the gym with a view to have a stab at the local park run in a few weeks.
